For Fox Sake // Fields & Furrows

We introduced For Fox Sake right here on the blog in December, and we’ve got even more fun in store today! We’re bringing you the inside scoop on Kathryn Patterson’s Fields & Furrows pattern. Keep reading for behind-the-scenes inspiration and tips, brought to you straight from the designer!

// When I saw the adorable prints in the For Fox Sake collection, I knew I wanted to design and sew with them. The whimsical creatures are kid-friendly, and the color palette is sophisticated enough for any grown-up room. To me, this meant any quilt I made with these fabrics would appeal to the whole family.

I especially love the hedgehogs and raccoons, but all the motifs are absolutely adorable. I called my design Fields & Furrows because that’s where the real-life versions of these animals live. The quilt is a great size for sofa cuddling! //

// Since the pattern calls for cutting the exact same patches from 7 different prints, stacking those ¼ yards before cutting really speeds up prep time. I cut them into two groups, one with 4 layers of fabric and one with 3. Much faster than cutting 7 different sets! Cutting for the 3 textured fabrics also goes really quickly as it’s mostly width of fabric strips.

It’s helpful to use a scant ¼” seam when sewing together the centers of the Kite Blocks. Those centers need to finish at 6 ½” x 12 ½” from raw edge to raw edge in order to fit with the rest of the piecing. If they come out a bit too big, you can trim them down, but if they are too small, things are going to get wonky. //

// Jill Coleman did the machine quilting on her Nolting longarm machine. We chose the Calla Lily pattern by Urban Elementz and Jill did an all over design. The curves of the leaves are a nice contrast to the straight lines of the piecing and fit with the theme of forests and fields. //
